About Coach Core

Coach Core is an employment and education charity that uses the long-term power of sport and apprenticeships to change the lives of young adults across the UK who traditionally experience barriers, discrimination and lack of opportunities.

Here’s the model:

  • We put disadvantaged young people on the path to a career with passion and purpose, getting them into employment and education at the same time.
  • The organisations that employ Coach Core apprentices get a passionate and diverse young workforce capable of making change in communities in which they’ll work, because they’re from them.
  • The community gets an increase in sport and activity provision – with proven physical and mental health benefits – from positive role models for the next generation.

Coach Core began as a programme at The Royal Foundation in 2012, as part of the legacy of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was shaped by seeing the devastation of the 2011 London riots and the Centre for Social Justice’s report that looked at how best to harness the power of sport to transform the lives of young people. What began as a single pilot programme has grown to an independent charity working in 19 sites across the UK and over 900 apprentices through the last 12 years.
